Ziele und Inhalt des Kurses: Global governance has its institutions and its object. The institutions provide an international framework of representation and decision-making. The object of global governance is the contemporary world’s global complexity. Before analysing the functioning of the international order, its limits and/or shortcomings, it is vital to examine the object: an interconnected yet ill-integrated globe, a now almost entirely modern world, the different scales from the most local to the nearly global, and the geographical dimension of ongoing conflicts. On Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, we will proceed region by region to get a critical idea of the many challenges of global governance and discover the ‘geo’ part of geopolitics (interactive lectures). On Friday afternoon, students will work in groups to understand how international institutions can address global challenges and prepare their individual assignments (workshop). On Saturday morning, we will focus on the ‘politics’ part of geopolitics and discuss how we can measure power (and weakness) in the contemporary global world.

Thema der einzelnen Lehreinheiten:

Ziele:
The course aims to provide critical means and tools to read global complexity, analyse the political geography of the global world, learn the grammar of international institutions, and reflect on the ‘big picture,’ i.e., the complexity of our interconnected and globally modern world. Critical reflection on Europe’s relative place and role in this global world and the location of global complexity in longer-term processes will get special attention. Students will also get familiar with the methodology of policy papers (individual assignments).
