Ziele und Inhalt des Kurses: Transatlantic relations are vital to Europe, but they are now undergoing profound change. The Trump administration’s rhetoric has raised doubts among allies about the United States´unbreakable friendship with Europe and the durability of the alliance. The bond between America and Europe – built over decades on shared economic interests, military ties, US promises to provide security and a mutual commitment to the principles of liberal democracy – is now coming under increasing strain. This seminar explores the strategic challenges facing Europe and the United States in an ever more complex global security environment. It examines the political forces that shape the transatlantic relationship and aims to help students understand its agenda from the perspectives of both sides of the Atlantic.
